How to Play
- The secret code is a row of four pegs chosen from six colours. Colours can repeat.
- Tap colours from the palette to build a guess of four pegs. Use Undo to take the last one back.
- Press Check. Small clue pegs appear next to your guess.
- A solid dot means one peg is the right colour in the right place. A hollow ring means one peg is the right colour but in the wrong place.
- Keep guessing and use every clue until the code is cracked — you have ten tries.
Rules
The clues never tell you which peg they belong to, only how many pegs earned them. A guess can score at most four clue pegs. Each colour in the code can only be matched once: if the code has one yellow and you play two, only one yellow can earn a clue.
Every colour also carries its own symbol — a circle, square, triangle, diamond, star or plus — so the pegs can be told apart even if some colours look alike to you. On a keyboard, the number keys 1 to 6 add pegs, Backspace removes one and Enter checks your guess.
Your score is the number of guesses you used. If ten guesses go by without cracking the code, the round counts as 11.
Tips & Strategy
- Open with two pairs. A first guess like two circles and two squares tests two colours and their positions at once, and it splits the possible codes into small groups.
- Treat zero clues as good news. A guess that earns nothing rules out every colour in it completely. That can remove hundreds of possible codes in one go.
- Change one thing at a time when you are close. If you have three solid dots, swap just one peg. The clue change shows you exactly which peg was wrong.
- Only guess codes that could still be right. Before pressing Check, test your guess against every earlier clue. A guess that breaks an old clue wastes a turn.
- Rings are position hints too. A ring tells you a colour is in the code but not where you put it, so the next time you use that colour, move it to a new spot.
Game Modes
Daily code is the same puzzle for everyone on the same IST day. Solve it to grow your daily streak, then share your clue rows as coloured emoji dots — they show how you did without revealing the answer.
Unlimited gives you a fresh random code each time you play, so you can practise as much as you like.
Play with Friend is a two-round duel on one phone. First, Player 1 secretly builds a code while Player 2 looks away, then Player 2 tries to crack it. In round two the roles swap. A "pass the device" screen appears each time the phone changes hands. Whoever cracks the other's code in fewer guesses wins, and an equal count is a draw.
Play with Friends Online
Online, Code Breaker becomes a race. Create a room, share the link, and when your friend joins, press Start. You both get the same secret code at the same moment and guess on your own screens. Beside your board you can see your rival's clue dots appear live, but never their colours, so you cannot copy their guesses. Fewer guesses wins; if you both need the same number, the faster finisher takes it. If neither cracks the code, it is a draw.
Code Breaker FAQ
Can the secret code use the same colour twice?
Yes. Codes such as two greens and two blues, or even four of one colour, are allowed. Keep that in mind before ruling out a colour you have already placed.
Is there always a way to crack the code in ten guesses?
Yes. Careful reasoning can crack any code with far fewer than ten tries. Most codes can be found in five or six guesses if every guess fits the earlier clues.
What do the solid dots and hollow rings mean?
A solid dot is a peg of the right colour in the right place. A hollow ring is a peg of the right colour in the wrong place. Empty spaces mean the rest of your pegs are not in the code at all.
Does the daily code change at midnight?
It changes once a day, following the date in India Standard Time. Everyone who plays on the same date gets the same code.
Can children play Code Breaker?
Yes. It needs no reading or spelling, just careful thinking, and the symbol on every peg helps younger players keep track of the colours.
